Whispers in the Dark

Chapter9

"Daniel, please help me!"

Daniel sat up on the bed. "Casey? Angel?"

Jack came over and gently sat down beside him. He put a hand on the younger man’s shoulder. "Daniel, I’m sorry, she’s…she’s gone."

Daniel shook his head. "I just heard her. She needs my help!"

"Please, Daniel, I’m getting cold, and I think I’m running out of oxygen here." Her voice pleaded with him.

The young man pushed Jack out of his way, and began to run toward the bridge. Teal'c and the general were right behind him. Once there, he pushed aside the young SF who was manning the scanners.

"Daniel, what are you doing?" Jack asked gently.

"She’s out there, Jack, I know it." Daniel said softly. He was already working the scanner, looking for any hint of a life sign, no matter how faint.

When two of the SF’s moved towards Daniel, with the intention of physically removing him from the bridge, as ordered quietly by Jacob Carter, Teal'c stepped beside him. "I do not believe there is any harm in allowing Daniel Jackson to search for his wife. If we do not, and she is out there, we will be guilty of allowing her to die."

"Let the man look. What’s it going to hurt? And like Teal'c said, she could be out there," Jack said.

"I agree," Selmak agreed firmly. Jacob thought it was a waste of time. She didn’t listen.

"Casey, babe, talk to me, where are you?" Although the others looked at Daniel as if he had lost his mind, Jack and Teal'c stood by him silently, hoping that one more miracle would keep SG-1 together.

"How the hell should I know? I’m in a friggin’ escape pod! Wait a minute…how come I can hear you in my head?"

He couldn’t help but laugh. That was his Casey! "I don’t know babe, let’s not worry about that right now. Just let me see if I can find you in all of this debris."

"Hurry up, please? I’m really starting to get cold…and it’s getting hard to breathe."

"I’m trying babe, just hang in there."

"Yeah, not much else I can do, is there?" was the sarcastic reply.

He chuckled. "Your blood sugar must be low, you’re grumpy," he teased.

"Hah! Blood sugar has nothing to do with it. Being about three minutes from becoming a dead Popsicle has everything to do with it!"

"I’m working on it babe, you won’t be a Popsicle, dead or alive, if I can help it."

Selmak was now helping him scan, Teal'c was also working one of the scanners. Jack was at the window looking at all the debris that he could see, trying to locate a single life pod among all of the floating scrap metal, silently praying that they would find it.

"Love you Daniel Jackson, my love, my heart, wherever you are." She sounded tired, scared, and as if she were saying goodbye.

"Casey Renee Jackson, don’t you dare give up on me!" Daniel demanded.

Casey shivered as she lay in the escape pod. How long had she been out here now? She couldn’t be sure, going through the force field in the cell had killed her watch. It felt like forever. She thought about what Daniel had said earlier, that any time she needed him, to just call. She sighed. She was going to die anyway, she was in a malfunctioning pod, she might just as well give it a try. "Daniel, please help me!"

"Casey? Angel?"

She jumped when she heard his voice. Was she losing her mind? Was she to go mad in the last few minutes of her life? She thought about how much she loved Daniel, thought about his blue eyes and his smile…about Emily, and how she would never see her grow up…about her parents…Sam and Jack and baby Evelyn…Teal'c, and Carly…and Duncan and Tessa. She shivered, tears running down her face. Well, if she was mad to talk to Daniel, then mad she would be, because it gave her comfort. "Please, Daniel, I’m getting cold, and I think I’m running out of oxygen here." For several minutes there was nothing.

"Casey, babe, talk to me, where are you?" his voice sounded panicked.

Just like him to ask a question like that, she grumped. "How the hell should I know? I’m in a friggin’ escape pod!" She suddenly realized that she wasn’t just imagining his voice, she was actually hearing him talk to her. As he was obviously hearing her. Just how the hell was that happening? What was going on? "Wait a minute…how come I can hear you in my head?

She could swear she heard him laughing. "I don’t know babe, let’s not worry about that right now. Just let me see if I can find you in all of this debris."

Now she knew that either they were really communicating, or she was totally insane. She shivered again, the temperature in the pod had dropped considerably, and she could tell that the oxygen level was dropping as well. "Hurry up, please? I’m really starting to get cold…and it’s getting hard to breathe."

"I’m trying babe, just hang in there."

Easy for him to say! "Yeah, not much else I can do, is there?"

Had he just chuckled? Yeah, he probably had. "Your blood sugar must be low, you’re grumpy," his voice was teasing. Of all the times to decide to tease her! She shook her head.

She was trying to read the control panel just above her face. If her Goa’uld was correct, and unfortunately she knew it was, she was in big trouble. "Hah! Blood sugar has nothing to do with it. Being about three minutes from becoming a dead Popsicle has everything to do with it!"

"I’m working on it, babe, you won’t be a Popsicle, dead or alive, if I can help it."

She closed her eyes. If Daniel really was out there, if he really was talking to her, then he wouldn’t let anything happen to her. If she was insane…she shuddered. "Love you, Daniel Jackson, my love, my heart, wherever you are."

"Casey Renee Jackson, don’t you dare give up on me!" His voice was demanding, and held just a bit of fear.

She sighed, then let unconsciousness surround her.
